Join the PHP'20 Fam (& FAQs)
Updated: Feb 12
Applications for the PNG Health Project 2020 trip are NOW OPEN and we are keen to have medical students that are passionate about health literacy join our team.
If you are passionate about empowering youth through health literacy, building incredible bonds with your teammates, and getting to explore the beautiful landscape and culture of Papua New Guinea, then the PNG Health Project is for you. We are all about educating the younger generation on basic health topics (i.e., sexual health, mental health, diet & exercise, oral health and hygiene, and substance use), so that they can feel confident in making the decisions that are best for them.
When: First week of Sept (tentatively)
Cost: Self-funded (~$1000); can apply for grants to assist with the cost
How to Apply
To access the application, you can use the "Apply" button in the menu or click the link below! Just fill out the quick and easy form and submit it. Once the applications close, we'll conduct short interviews with the candidates to pick our '20 Team!
Applications Close: Feb 19th @ 5PM
Who can apply to join the PHP team?
UQ Medical Students from any year level. If you aren't a UQ Med Student but would like to apply, you can contact our recruitment officer at email@example.com to discuss your position. We reserve the right to assess these on a case-by-case basis.
What's the cost of the trip?
Approximately $1000. However, last year through sponsorship and grants, we were able to make the trip free for most volunteers, excluding personal spending costs.
Will the trip affect my study for exams?
We tailor our trip dates to allow for ample time to study for and sit the UQ Medicine mid-semester exams for Phase 1 students. This trip would also be suited to Yr 3 students undertaking the hospital practice semester. Additionally, in the past, there has been heaps of private/group study among participants on the trip, which has yielded very good results in these exams (combined brain power for the win!).
How is the team selected?
Following the written application process, successful applicants will be offered a 10-15 minute Skype interview with three members of the PHP team. This is a casual interview with no need for preparation. Just tell us about yourself and why you're passionate about empowering youth through health!
Where do we stay?
We stay in private accommodation in Port Moresby with private security 24/7.
Is it safe to travel around PNG as a group of foreigners?
All travel will be undertaken on a private bus with two local guides and a driver. If you are a sensible traveller, there should be nothing to worry about. There have never been any safety concerns on previous trips.
What do you do on the trip?
We visit 5 schools over 5 weekdays to teach our respective stations, educating year 5-12 students. On the weekend, we plan a trip to the Highlands with a 1-day Kokoda Trail hike and camping at Koitaki Country Club. We also schedule some time at the local hospital, amongst other fun activities.
We hope this answers all of your questions about the trip, but if not, feel free to send us a message: firstname.lastname@example.org or contact us through the website.
